Subject: LETTER TO THE EDITOR:IN DEFENCE OF DEFENCE

Dear Sir,
Apropos various articles that have been appearing in the Times of India recently with reference to defence land and, in particular, today's piece which headlines that 88%of defence land is not utilised, I wish to ask the people behind this report--have they just woken up? And though I think we are all aware that certain politicians, in particular, have been eyeing defence land for some time now, what needs to be emphasised is that it is unwise to alter land use pertaining to defence lands as there is a purpose to keeping lands captive  for military purposes(firing ranges, weapon systems, training grounds, etc.).Hence, they cannot be tampered with.

Given that land use has become increasingly contentious recently in view of the allocation of lands under the clearly controversial SEZ Act and the subsequent struggles that have ensued and are ensuing for repossession, it was inevitable that the Government of today would go after the softest target-and that just happens to be the disciplined defence forces. It is about time that the country realises that the defence forces exist for the defence of the country and their preparedness cannot be affected by knee-jerk policies(actuated by greed and a blatant disregard of the Constitution) of our present political dispensation. Please leave the defence forces alone.
