[rti4empowerment] DNA: No action against Adarsh scamsters miffs RTI activists

Mumbai, Monday, Nov 29: Right to Information (RTI) activists are unhappy with the new chief minister of Maharashtra, Prithviraj Chavan, as he has not taken any action against those involved in the Adarsh scam. They have asked citizens to write letters to Chavan and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, asking them why Ramanand Tiwari, whose name has come up in the scam, still continues as a state information commissioner and why no action has been taken against bureaucrats.

In an online open letter to Chavan, they have written: "Congratulations on your new assignment as chief minister. Need we remind you that you are in this post because of the Adarsh scam? As an unfamiliar figure in the politics of this state, your only claim to legitimacy as CM in the common man's eyes is your seeming willingness to punish the scamsters. Otherwise, what is the difference between you and your tainted predecessor?" The letter is available at http://tinyurl.com/AdarshCM1 to download and to circulate.

It adds: "Sushilkumar Shinde, Vilasrao Deshmukh, Ashok Chavan, Suresh Joshi, Ramanand Tiwari and Jairaj Phatak have not been interrogated. Also, no FIR has been registered despite ample documentary evidence of criminal wrongdoings. There is no move to put these influential persons under judicial restraint to save evidence from being tampered with and witnesses being pressured."

RTI activist Krishnaraj Rao said: "If common people paste a poster on a public wall, we may land up in jail. But these officers have nothing to be afraid of. We feel the new CM was brought here because of the Adarsh scam. It should be his first duty to punish those who are involved in the scam. Why is there complete silence on this front?"

The activists are particularly unhappy about Tiwari continuing as state information commissioner. "His name has come up in the scam, and he handles the state information commission. He has hidden important facts from the people. Our blood boils when we see such people involved in the bureaucracy," said Rao.

Activists plan to start a campaign, 'One justice for all', across the city, highlighting the names of the scamsters.
