[rti4empowerment] Police in marriage party

Friends,

Yesterday, I read an interesting news in the local newspaper. It was about the massive police arangement made in Deoria district in UP in a police station caled Barhaj. The occasion was the marriage ceremony of some powerful politician whose son was getting married.

As per the newspaper report, which was quite vivid and detailed in its content, the police department had taken over the entire mariage ceremony and was doing its job wonderfully well. The report said that the policemen could be seen at the stage, managing the entire program, they were there at the place where the food were being coocked, they were also assting in proper distribution of food. It named policeofficers who were also playing hosts and were attending to the important guests so that they did not have any trouble. As per the media report, the Superintendent of Police of the district was himself there to monitor the entire set of operations. In sum, the report concluded that the marriage ceremony had turned into a massive police show.

Now, when an ordinary reader reads it,what is the first reaction he or she has? Is it not that while I had been running from pillar to post to get one constable for a particular work of mine which was quite genuine and in which I was being undluy and unneccesarily tormented, I could not get it or got it only after so much of pain, while on the other hand, here is a person who is getting hundreds of policemen just in his/her son's marriage. Don't people start remembering occassions when their houses were burgaled or a dacoity took place or their daughter was misbehaved with ir they met a serious accident or their house caught fire or their house was illegally trespased and ocupied and they went on crying and yelling, but to no avail.

All I want to say through this is that police is a department that is overworked and has so many problems up its sleeves. At the same time, unluckily for it, there are so many such unwarranted, unwanted and wasteful exercises it has to get involved into that it is not being able to attend many of the really important works that police is suposed to be doing. This is one problem that we face in a big way in today's socio-political system. Be it VVIP/ VIP security or personal programs, they are taking up a very large chunk of our manpower and manhours.

While I  sermonize today, I myself remember having wasted the police manpower into wasteful exercises including mariage ceremonies of powerful people just so that they don't get displeased. Must be frank in admiting that none of these really helped and whatever was to hapen regarding my transfer from that place happened. All that was left to me was the remorse of having fallen into the pitfall of wasting police manpower.

These are some very important issues that we need to look into deeply if we want to maximize the effectiveness of our police force. I salute all those police officers who were strong enough not to have falen prey to these things from the begining and wish that their tribe increases in large numbers.
