The battle against the unique identification number is set to enter courts.A 74-year-old former colonel from Bangalore has issued legal notices to the prime minister, the deputy chairman of the Planning Commission and the chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for wasting public money on the Aadhar project.

Something has to be done to stop them from acting arbitrarily. The NIAI (National Identification Authority of India) Bill is yet to passed by Parliament, but Aadhar numbers are being issued and multi-crore contracts for executing the project are arbitrarily being awarded to private companies. These are being done without any legal sanction, said Retd Col Mathew Thomas,a resident of Whitefield.

Mathew has alleged that the Centre constituted UIDAI and appointed Nandan Nilekeni it chairman against the provisions of the Constitution.NIAI Bill is yet to be tabled in Parliament. Before the bill is approved by Parliament and notified in the gazette, how can the government appoint a chairman It is done to help private companies. The government has awarded the tender to dubious companies in many states, Mathew alleged.

Mathew said when the UK government had proposed a similar project in 2005,the London School of Economics observed that such projects would not achieve their objectives.Later, the UK government had scrapped the project.

IIM-Ahmedabad had questioned the feasibility of UID project in our country and suggested examination of its validity. In coming years, more than Rs 15 lakh crore will be wasted, said Mathew. The government thinks fingerprint cannot be faked. We have demonstrated how it can be forged to principal secretary of state government who is nodal officer to implement the project, said B T Venkatesh, colonel Mathews advocate.
