[rti4empowerment] Indian Police and the Four Varna

Friends,

When we were having discussions about the US/UK system of policing, where it emerged that there is only one point of entry, that of the Constable level. Unlike that, we in India have multiple levels of entry. There are generally four levels of entry in Police force in most States. They are-

1.       IPS

2.       Provincial Police Service

3.       Sub Inspector

4.       Constable

One of our friends in the diuscussion said that this was in consonance with our societal structure which is too much Caste and heirarchy driven. Just like there are four Varna in Indian society- Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra there are also four levels of enmtry in police. The police officers at these different levels of entry are treated almost in the same manner as these four Varna.

How do friends react to this?
