THE PUBLIC POLL HAS BEEN SET UP AS THE LOKPAL BILL DRAFTING COMMITTEE IS DIVIDED ON THE ISSUE
India Against Corruption (IAC), the nongovernment organisation that has been actively promoting the Jan Lokpal Bill, is conducting a public poll across the city to determine whether the prime minister and Indian judiciary should come under the purview of the Lokpal.
During the recently held Lokpal Bill drafting committee meeting, panel members were sharply divided on whether the office of the prime minister and the judiciary should be under the purview of the Lokpal.
"Both of these points were strongly debated. Therefore, we decided to seek a public opinion and launched the poll campaign," said Mayank Gandhi, IAC's Mumbai coordinator.
The poll has been divided into two phases. The first poll began on May 8 and will continue over a fortnight.
During this poll, 50 volunteers of the IAC, who have stationed themselves on Western and Central Railway stations, will ask commuters if they think the prime minister should be brought under the Lokpal's ambit.
"We have put up banners asking the same question outside the railway stations. Adjacent to the banner, boxes are kept in which people have to drop chits with only `yes' or `no' as an answer.
Our volunteers will assist people in case of any queries," said Gandhi.
The second public poll asking if the Indian judiciary should be brought under the Lokpal's ambit will begin on May 23. It will be conducted in the same fashion as the first poll.
"Both the surveys are held separately because we need time to explain the merits and demerits of both. We want people to understand the issue and then cast their vote," said Piyush Bhatia, IAC volunteer. "Our volunteersatrailwaystationsexplain the issue to the public before taking their opinion."
IAC Mumbai is conducting presentations and training volunteers on how to best explain the issue to the public.
