because we get kicked around by dirty leaders and bureaucrats
and our fear makes us invent excuses not to do anything about this mess

Honesty has been dying in this country. Sonavane's death shames us all. We must claim responsibility for his death because we have allowed the system to fall to this level.
We are the cowards who fail to protect those who serve us.
A top industrialist once said to me that he had done his duty and paid his taxes honestly and no more social service could be expected from him. And thus he rationalised his cowardice. We must certainly expect more from the educated and wealthy middle class. They should be the ones leading reform. Instead, they have handed over the country to the bandits who steal our wealth.
In varying degrees we are all guilty. We have declined to confront evil for the sake of our security, our business, our peace of mind.
Pseudo intellectuals tell us not to go near politics. Another brand of cowardice. NGOs say they are not allowed to be political. What stops members of NGOs from acting in their individual capacities? Politics is the area which has to be cleaned to improve governance. Yet politics is what we tell everyone to run away from and we garb our fear in some sort of "analysis"!
Petrol adulteration is not new. Some years ago 12,000 liters of kerosene, meant for fair price shops for the poor, was diverted into the black market. False records were fabricated to show that the kerosene was sent to the villages and received in the fair price shops. (The quantity is not important. It would have enabled us to grab the big fish). The Deputy Collector concealed all this in his report. When I suspended him an order was received from government cancelling the suspension and placing him in the same post. To this day he walks unpunished. Who will take up this case? It is fully documented.
Those (politicians and bureaucrats) who rule us don't just support the mafia. They are the mafia. They are the godfathers of the hungry young men who wield the knife on the street. The godfathers of the cops who sometimes try and protect us but are often forced to protect the crime doers.
