A city businessman felt the 'full force' of officialdom – literally – when he dared to question the cleaning of a drain which he claims was in perfectly good condition. K N Jagadish Kumar, a resident of Maruti Layout in Vidyaranyapura, has alleged that he was thrashed for questioning his area corporator over the work.

Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, Kumar said, "The incident took place in front of my office on Virupakashapura main road. BBMP assistant engineer Devegowda and his men removed the metal grate from the drain on Thursday. I was out of town, but when I returned the same evening I called Devegowda and asked if they had a work order from BBMP. His reply was abusive and threatening. On Friday morning, he came along with ward 9 corporator Nandini K, her husband Srinivas and some others. I questioned them again and said I would seek the relevant information under the RTI Act. At that, they assaulted me so badly that I collapsed. My office CCTV has the footage of the corporator's aides manhandling me as she looked on. I have registered an FIR against them."

Recalling an earlier incident, Jagadish said, "When the BJP called for a bandh on January 21, I did not close my office. Srinivas threatened me and I have given a written complaint to the police."

Denying Jagadish's allegations, Nandini said, "The residents had complained about water stagnating in the drain, and we had started the cleaning work. Jagadish had stopped the work, asking for the work order. The next day, he behaved rudely and our supporters hit him. My husband did not assault him. The work was taken up on an emergency basis and there was no fault from our side."

Assistant engineer Devegowda said he was not present when Jagadish was assaulted. "By the time I came, the police had arrived. We finished the work in their presence," he said.

Kodigehalli police inspector Chandrashekar K said the police were investigating the complaints by both the parties.
