Sonia Gandhi and the hidden trail

The Indian media has begun even doubting Manmohan Singh’s integrity â€" mental, at least â€"  as he must have been knowing for nearly two years that the Indian exchequer was defrauded of `1.76 lakh crores. But so far,  Sonia Gandhi has been spared.

Yet, if you are an observer of Indian politics, as I have been, since I landed back in India in the early ’Sixties, you have to come to the conclusion that most of the funds of scams end up in the coffers of political parties, particularly of the Congress.

Today the DMK is taking the brunt of the blame, but actually political parties have been forced to follow suit after the grand old party of India’s independence, began using percentages allotted by foreign companies on mega deals, military and otherwise,  to secretly fund its election campaigns and give freebies to poor villagers. Of course, Bofors was the first one of the big scams to be uncovered.

I remember in the mid-Eighties a Swiss radio colleague of mine from Radio Suisse Romande, telling me that Amitabh Bachchan’s brother, Ajitabh,  (when the Bachchan family was still close to the Gandhis), was one of the first safe keepers of the kickbacks of the Swedish canon makers. Exposes of Swedish newspaper, Dagens Nhyeter further confirmed it, though Ajitabh went to court against them.

There is no doubt, further says my Swiss friend, that part of the Bofors money is still in Switzerland. Indeed, we are all waiting for the Swiss banks to reveal (under US pressure)  the names of all the dictators, thieves, dishonest rulers of so many countries in the world, who have stashed their ill-gotten money in UBS bank or Credit Suisse.

Meanwhile, all roads seem to lead to Sonia Gandhi: she is the first Lady of India, although she is a simple MP like hundreds of others, the ultimate arbiter, and nothing of importance is decided without her caveat. The immense power she wields within the Congress cannot be only due to her charisma, of her having the Gandhi name or having brought cohesion in the Congress.

It is also, and perhaps mainly, because she holds the purse strings of tremendous amounts of money. These party funds are overt: all the foundations, Rajiv, Indira, Nehru, etc, which store thousands of crores; and covert, starting with the Bofors scam. Where are the secret bank accounts where the scam money is stored? Under whose names are they operated? How is the money brought back to India? Who will answer all these questions?

We know that Quattrochi, the man who could have spilt the beans, was shamelessly let off the hook, not only by the CBI which today is conducting â€" two years late â€" the investigation on the 2G scam, but also by the then law minister who is today the  governor who pretends to be after corruption in Karnataka! Not only was Quattrochi spared, but was allowed to take the money he had looted from India and which was frozen in British banks, so that he would not talk.

Will Raja talk, if he is arrested, as it is rumoured? Surely he knows a lot of secrets, as some of the 2G, Adarsh CWG money,  and other unknown scams, must also have gone into the Congress coffers. That is the question that the Congress leadership should debate instead of going after ‘Hindu terror’, a misnomer if there is one.

If you look at statistics for the last 1,000 years, it is Hindus who have been at the receiving end of terror â€" millions of them have died, including in Kashmir in the late ’Eighties, when Benazir Bhutto launched her ‘Azad Kashmir’ movement (I was there).

Yet Sonia Gandhi remains a mystery for many of us, even for me who has known her for a long time.

I found her quite likable when she was just Rajiv Gandhi’s (the pilot) spouse, a loving wife, who had adopted the Indian way of life;  a good daughter -in-law: Indira Gandhi died on her lap on the way to the hospital, after being shot by her Sikh bodyguards; and more than everything, a good mother, who doted on her children and tried all her life to protect them.

I then knew that she had kept her Italian passport, even after taking the Indian nationality (India does not allow you to hold two passports), but I have met quite a few foreigners in Delhi who also retained their origin passports after having obtained the Indian one.

I myself toyed for some time with the idea of taking the Indian nationality, as I speak Hindi quite fluently, but it is too difficult to travel with an Indian passport. I do not mind also her remaining a Christian:  after all, I am still one myself. Indeed, one of my Italian journalist friends told me that he prayed with her, along with Rajiv Gandhi, at a mass in Calicut with the bishop officiating â€" that is her private business.

But after her husband was blown to pieces by the LTTE,  I observed a drastic change in her: she did not seem to trust anybody anymore, became aloof and suspicious. I also watched with dismay how the Congress leaders, some of them men and women of substance, whom I knew personally, applied pressure on her to enter politics for years.

Furthermore, I thought that in her fortress of Janpath, surrounded twenty-four hours by security,  she gradually lost touch with the reality of India. Despite the fact that I met her a few times after Rajiv’s death, I thus took discreetly my distances with her. It is then that I came up with my famous phrase on Sonia, for which she never forgave me:  “the moribund and leaderless Congress party has latched on to Sonia Gandhi who is Italian by birth and Roman Catholic by baptismâ€.

Never expected to see such a report - critical of the high priestess of crime and congress- in the express group of publications! I am amoungst those who had stopped buying IE/NIE after seeing its degeneration. Shall get back if the media. led by Express, finally brings her to justice.

Excellant article - all bare facts. We Indians should atleast now realise whata the present day CONgress & Sonia is & thro them out. CONgress can not remain without power & they need a grass from Nehru family to keep them together. Shame on all COngress Chamchas to look at a foreigner with dubious background & no great capability/ qualification - except that she has married a Son of Indira Gandhi - for their survival. Let all Indians realise that it is their wealth that is being looted like what was done during Moghul invasion & when Britain & other foreigners invaded us. Time has come now to thro them out. Jaihind.

Shocked as we are all about the sheer magnitude of CWG scam, it is rather hard to swallow that such a large Corporate scam would be conducted without the connivance of all the major political parties. Sure as ruling coalition UPA would get a larger cut, but I bet so did the NDA and the Communists. After all that is sensible business practice as followed everywhere in India. If you want to buy a contentious plot, pay 10 lakhs to the Congress Party, if they are ruling, 7 lakhs to BJP if they are in Oppn, 5 lakhs to CPM, if they are smaller Oppn just to quiet them out. The JPC would be definitely be another white wash. It would deliberate on 2G scam until 2050 by which time everyone would forget about it and Indian citizens suffer. Really is anyone naive enough to believe BJP/CPM/Cong would ever let the truth fully come out and punish the faulty? I bet that kickbacks have also been paid to the Judiciary. We do not have an untainted body in our nation after all.

I am no one to say if its true or not. But one thing for sure that the article is driven by emotions. Writer lacks the knowledge of democracy and economic system on a complex democratic country like ours.

well written article.it is proved beyond doubt that hinds are docile, slave like mentality, idle, gossip laden, impotents.they can never learn any lesson.they are at receiving end all the while and ruled by others although they are in a majority.in India they were ruled by Muslims rulers for 600 long years and Christan English for 200 odd years and now the congress which is party of illegitimate children of midnight.congress has abused all Hindus by divide and rule policy of English and divided Hindus by castes and religions.it has ruled India by such policy which is beneficial to them only.the looted money of trillions is in swiss banks but no leader cared to take suitable action to bring it back to enrich India and its democracy.we are in peril by inadequate safeguards and lack of latest arms and ammunitions.we are lacking in nukes in comparison to our bitter enemies like Pakistan and china.our military is being demoralized by congress party for obvious reasons. From the way John began the article i thought he is going to make some of dramatic revelations...but sot of filzzled out in the end. Nonetheless, good, well written article containing lot of indisputable facts...though most of which are known to most. As one of the readers here has put, needs to be widely circulated atleast for the sake of the facts mentioned about the Bofors and Quattrochi.

Well said. Congress is the fountainhead of corruption in India. Can ANYONE belive that huge money of 70,000 crores CWG scam and 1,76,000 crores 2G scam could have been pocketed by any one person under the very nose of congress; money has gone to the Congress party. Hence in initial inaction in both the cases, and much belated, "raids" now!! A complete whitewash. The 'honest' PM is no longer honest after all-he is the show boy of the party. And yes, rightly said, she is far removed from the Indian realities-both by birth and by design. What a price to India pays for democracy!!

INDIA WAS RULED BY BRITISH FOR 200 YEARS, NOW BY ITALIAN CHRISTIANS FOR HOW MANY MORE YEARS?. THE ARTICLE STRIKES AT THE HEART OF 2G ISSUE. IT CANNOT BUT BE TRUE. IT EXPLAINS A LOT .

Well written! The writer is spot on when he says that she holds the purse strings. No wonder she hates JPC. Every time Congress ruled poor people suffered because of high inflation. Will the writer do something to bring down the unbearable prices commodities?

Incredible... that it got published in an Indian newspaper! Are the long knives finally out? Do they sense that the CONgress is so weakened that they can crawl out from under the rock they have been hiding? Or has their disgust with the corruption and a belated sense of nationalism finally stiffened their spine? Whatever; this is a welcome change, even it is only temporary. For India to claim she's a democracy and a modern nation. it is utterly shameful how the dynasty is being perpetuated by a political party that lost its bearings long ago.The only principle that the CONgress stands for is the principle of plunder; one that it shares with its predecessor, the East India Company.

Sonia Gandhi is an evil force on the Nation that has been encouraged by corrupt and power hungry congress netas for their own survival. The number of scams that are tumbling down in quick succession may be attributed to her greed for money. The money trail in her case may cross Indian borders and lead to tax havens across the world. Aam aadmi in India is however, concerned about the sky rocketing price of onion and tomatoes for his daily roti. Hail Indian democracy and long live Sonia Gandhi !
