Subject: [ESG-LIST] Parliament told that Mahyco/Monsanto will be prosecuted for biopiracy in Bt Brinjal case
Smt. Jayanti Natarajan, Indian Minister of State for Environment and Forests (Independent Charge), has confirmed in a written reply to Parliament that the National Biodiversity Authority will "proceed as per law" against M/s Monsanto/Mahyco and their collaborators for promoting Bt Brinjal in patent violation of the Biological Diversity Act. The statement was made in the Rajya Sabha yesterday, and a copy of the PIB release is enclosed.
As per the Act, criminal prosecution has to be initiated by NBA against all the violators.

Funding of NBA on BT. BRINJAL |
National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has received a complaint from M/s. Environment Support Group, an NGO on the alleged violation by M/s. Mahyco / M/s. Monsanto and their collaborators for accessing and using the local brinjal varieties for development of Bt Brinjal. NBA has decided to proceed as per law against the alleged violators on the basis of reports of the State Biodiversity Board for accessing and using the local brinjal varieties without prior approval of the competent authority. This information was given by the Minister of State for Environment and Forests (Independent Charge) Shrimati Jayanthi Natarajan in a written reply to a question by Shri M.P. Achuthan And Shri D.
