[rti4empowerment] Re: Proposed Private RTI Amendment Bill 2011

Dear Friends,

I believe by now we all know that section 6(2) is the heart and soul of the RTI Act, and if it is amended then RTI Act can virtually / safely be consigned to a bin!!!!!

The proposed amendment Bil1, 2011 by a private member aims at amending two aspects of section 6(2):

Present Position

New Position

An applicant making request for information shall not be required to give any reason for requesting the information

An applicant making request for information shall give reason for requesting the information

OR any other personal details except those that may be necessary for contacting him

AND other personal details including those details that may be necessary for contacting him.

Although a recent statement from the respected union law minister is reassuring, but when it comes to the floor of the house of parliament he holds just one vote, and as such this assurance has to be backed by the entire political party.

The landmark and historical citizen empowering RTI Act runs a huge risk if and when the Bill goes to the floor of the house for voting.

If by any chance the proposed Bill scrapes through ..... May God forbid this.

Please Watch out!

Best Regards,

Sunil.
