N-plants porous in terms of safety: RTI

MUMBAI: At a time when the country is boosting its nuclear power prowess and villagers in Tamil Nadu are protesting the Kudankulam project, an RTI query has revealed how nuclear plants in India are porous in terms of the safety infrastructure.

An RTI filed by activist
Chetan Kothari showed the nuclear plant in Kalpakkam, 70km from Chennai and 700km south of Kudankulam, has a botched-up history of safety. In its response, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited has confessed that some of its workers had faced radiation.

"There were some instances when a few technicians, during routine maintenance activities, received Tritium uptake more than investigation level," stated the NPCIL response.

"The investigation level of uptake is conservatively kept very low compared to the permissible limits of exposure. The incidents of such nature are thoroughly investigated and actions are taken to prevent recurrence. Also, such workers are removed from any work involving radiation and redeployed only after their Tritium uptake comes down to insignificant levels (a natural phenomena)."

Kalpakkam holds an important place on the Indian nuclear map. The two pressurized heavy water reactors installed at Kalpakkam were developed indigenously.
