Re: [rti4empowerment] Mumbai Railways, World Class International Metro & RTI - Part I

Solutions are possible but there is no will!  If at all there is will it is entangled in red tape!

Slum Rehabilitation is the first and foremost thing they should undertake to generate space in Mumbai. Unfortunately it is only a tool to make promises when elections approach! Initially it was to rehabilitate those in slums upto 1985, went on to 90, and now it is going to be till now! The irony is that they have not given accommodation to even those listed for 1985! And because of infrastructural demands slums are dearer than flats, especially around air port!

They have created Navi Mumbai to stop vertical development and now the powers that be and the mafias appear to cling to Mumbai and is mooting a very lavish project to reclaim Marine lines and Gateway sea! May be if some infrastructure mafia recommends to make Mumbai itself a multi storied city there would be so many to jump into the gravy band wagon! As it is Mumbai s like a severely injured patient with bandages all over and further bandages are increasing!  Or it is like having pushed in a ball into a bottle with narrow neck and to extricate the ball you have to break the bottle, yes Mumbai is now this bottle and to do any thing orderly we have to break this bottle!!

Subject: [rti4empowerment] Mumbai Railways, World Class International Metro & RTI - Part I

Dear Friends,
Mumbai Suburban Railways, World Class International Metro & RTI

Part - I

Every day lakhs of Mumbaikars commute inhumanly in overcrowded trains, wherein almost 4700 passengers travel against the rated capacity of 1800 passengers in a 9 car rake. To alleviate this problem, the passenger carrying capacity of the Mumbai Suburban Railway needs to be increased.

Following are some of the ways to increase the passenger carrying capacity of the Mumbai Suburban Railway

Expand Horizontally: One way to do this would be to expand horizontally by acquiring more ground level property adjacent to existing railway tracks, lay fresh additional tracks and thereby increase the passenger carrying capacity. But acquiring property is a big constraint in any Metro City across the world, and Mumbai City is no different, hence, it would be an extremely difficult  and expensive proposition.

Expand Vertically: Another way would be to expand vertically by introducing an elevated railway corridor above the existing railway tracks. Given that there are property constraints in a Metro City, expanding vertically may be relatively more feasible than expanding horizontally, but the cost of investing in a vertical infrastructure would be extremely high.

Tweak & Optimize existing Infrastructure: Ideally, before engaging in the most difficult (if not impossible)task of acquiring property beside the railway tracks to expand horizontally or investing heavily in a vertical expansion, the existing available infrastructure should be optimized to the maximum.

Q: So is there a Scope for augmenting the capacity of Mumbai Suburban Railway by optimizing the use of existing tracks & basic infrastructure?

Ans: Yes Very Much.

To be Continued .....

Best Regards,

Sunil.
