Bangalore:
M N Vijay Kumar fears a threat to his life; wants police to ensure safety
measures at his office in V V Towers
Controversial senior IAS officer, M N Vijay Kumar, has stopped going to
work. He has been on leave for more than a month now. The man, who once had
held a `board meeting' on the road outside the offices at Mysore Lamps
Limited and who had led a fight against corruption in government, fears for
his life. He believes that his current office on the 21st floor of VV
Towers, is unsafe and that it offers easy access to intruders.
According to his wife, JN Jayashree, Kumar fears that his detractors
would kill him and make it look like an accidental death. So, Kumar has
decided not to resume work until the government puts in place safety
measures such as a grill and a parapet wall. He's been on leave since the
second week of March.
Kumar and his wife, have written a letter to the state police chief, S T
Ramesh to visit, inspect his chamber and provide an assurance that it is
indeed safe. "He will go to work only if the police chief certifies that it
is safe to work from that office. Otherwise my husband will stay at home,"
Jayashree told the Bangalore Mirror. "Once the police chief visits the
place, he will know how difficult it is to work from there. Death is so
close there," she said.
In the past, Kumar was at the centre of several controversies. As
managing director of Mysore Lamps Limited, he had staged a dharna on the
road when security guards stopped him from entering the office premises.
When posted as special secretary, energy reforms department, he had
raised an alarm over the misuse of Rs 344 crore government funds. He also
started a whistle-blowers forum comprising IAS officers across the country.
Stung by his constant tirades, the state government posted him to an
insignificant post as the principal secretary and officer on special duty,
departmental enquiry manual, department of personnel and administrative
reforms (DPAR). It's his sixth transfer is as many months and the first
after three months without a posting. He was asked to function from the 21st
floor of VV Towers building.
On his first visit to the office on March 7, Kumar realised how unsafe
his office was. On March 11, he dashed off a letter to the state police
chief, stating he feared for his life, and has refused to return to work
ever since. He is now exhausting all the leave he has at his disposal.
Alleged attempts on his life during his previous posting as
administrator, CADA, has forced the principal secretary's family to resort
to desperate measures.
"Yes, safety is a concern. There have been attempts on his life in past
too. The new office has glass windows, glass doors and several entrances.
The opening does not even have a parapet. How can we consider it to be safe
with threats to his life," questioned Jayashree, who has also written to DG.
There are frequent visitors to VV Towers as it commands a magnificent aerial
view of the city. However, the state DG and IGP said that the officers plea
will be addressed. Ramesh said, "We will certainly ensure his safety. I have
entrusted the responsibility to Om Prakash, additional DGP (grievances)."
