Friends,
Another eye-catching news item I saw today was titled- "Lashkar man now an IAS aspirant."
It said-
"An Lashkar-e-Toiba militant facing trial in several high-profile cases wants to write the civil services exams. A local court here directed the superintendent of Central Jail Srinagar to facilitate the "applicant" Shabir Ahmad Bukhari in submitting his form.
He once cleared the preliminary exams but could not sit for the mains as he reached the examination centre late due to non-availability of escort party.
Bukhari was arrested in 2006 and has six cases of militancy filed against him including plotting to kill former Minister of State for Education Ghulam Nabi Lone.
He is also facing trial on charges of planning a suicide attack in Srinagar during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to the Valley in 2004."
The news item ended with these words- "A senior jail official, on condition of anonymity, said Bukhari will be provided with books and newspapers."
So, how does one react to this news? One way could be to think of Valmiki, the legendary author of Ramayana or Angulimal, who interacted with Lord Buddha and who had a masive change in his life. Other thought that might come is about the speed of our Criminal Justice system, thinking that if this person gets convicted in the said crimes, what will happen to his service, if he gets selected? The third one could be about how this person lost his exam. Another related point might be-"why does an official need to seek anonimity when saying such innocuous things like-"Bukhari will be provided with books and newspapers.
