[rti4empowerment] Re: Fwd: Pl Think : It will hurt all of us in India

Here is a list of good articles on Walmart as it operates US . This
is not be confused with Walmart or any other organised retail store in
China or elsewhere . Each countries has different laws & is in
different economic & social development stage & has different
needs .

If you want to make a point , you need to prove that the
economic & social circumstances are similar. US , Japan , EU have been in economic decline or stagnation for quite some time now it began in the 70s . Many a industries have been wiped out autos , steel , consumer electronics , white goods the reason is not Walmarts , it is the low wages & higher productivity else where . The Japs took away auto manufacturing in the 80s. Consumer electronics & white goods fled to Japan is now shared by Taiwan , Korea , China etc.

Even Indian farmers face competition ; our tea faces competes with Kenyan tea , jute has competition from Bangladesh , vanilla from Madagascar , sugar & coffee from Brazil . In world trade countries win & loose all the time , has been the only constant since trade began. The rise of China has been its manufacturing . India its services. In a few decades it will be another scenario as Africa too is rising.

In US less than 3% population depends on agriculture , there is more competition & choice for the consumer than any where , the national productivity is among the highest , consumer protection is great , the anti-competitive laws are well enforced . Community causes are taken up strongly.

We already have Reliance , Tata , Raheja , Birla & Goenkas opening
HyperMarts where profits are to be made.If you do not allow FDI , they will be our Walmarts , which according to many here is bad thing to do ... just that they will not invest in the back-end that will save the grains , veggies & fruits from rotting as the investment does not offer high immediate returns . Means the Kiranas & Mom & Pop stores are already getting hurt & will face more of it as our Local Walmarts spread from one neighborhood to the other. Reliance does not have any better reputation than Walmart , is known to gets its way policy wise & the less said about its corporate practices the better.

If we had the needed investment in silos and cold storages , efficient
farm to table infrastructure , there would be more food on the table ,
of better quality , more hygienic , cheaper that what it costs
today & the farmers too would be better off....max benefit will go
to the very poor who are hit the most by food inflation.

We already have the worst model in place for big organised retail .
It is courtesy the "policy formation deal with the politicians , like
the 2G or KG6 deals " by our big Corporates who have gotten in themselves and have kept real competition out successfully ...as they smell that there is big money to be made . Am sure they have never been happier with what they see on road and in parliament..

Articles, Studies and Resources on Walmart
http://reclaimdemocracy.org/walmart/
Introduction
ReclaimDemocracy.org is devoted to restoring citizen authority over
corporations, rather than repeatedly fighting harms caused by
individual corporations. So why do we compile such a vast collection
of information on one company and assist communities resisting its
power? Simply because Walmart is perhaps the most visible symptom of
the disease -- runaway corporate power -- that we work to cure, and a
magnet for citizens who we hope will go on to address structural
problems.
We use Walmart as an entry point for deepening readers' awareness of
systemic problems and -- most importantly -- pro-active solutions. We
selectively archive articles we believe will be of lasting interest,
including many that are pro-chain or otherwise oppose our positions.
If you seek daily news or commentary on Walmart, see our links page
for sites providing that.
Our work related to Walmart includes:
* revoking corporations' power to override local decision-making
authority;
* agitating for enforcement of laws that protect workers' rights and
safety;
* stopping massive subsidies that flow to major corporate chains,
unfairly handicapping independent businesses and precluding true
market competition
guiding people to pro-active models to support independent business
ans halt corporatization locally (AMIBA.net & ILSR.org are great
places to start).
