PROTESTING AGAINST the alleged ill-treatment of an RTI activist by Information Commissioner Arvind Singh Bisht, several activists staged dharna outside the Chief Minister's residence in Lucknow Monday evening.

The dharna, which was also attended by suspended IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, was called off after a memorandum was submitted to Akhilesh Yadav.

Bisht has denied the allegation, claiming that the activist, Tanveer Ahmed Siddiqui, was "misbehaving in my office and trying to blackmail me".

Activist Siddiqui, as per reports, had his case listed in the court of the Information Commissioner. "But my case was disposed of without giving me the desired information. The commissioner, who is a close relative of Mulayam Singh Yadav, abused me and later called the police. I was detained at Hazratganj police station. I was also beaten up at the commissioner's office," Siddiqui had alleged. Bisht's daughter Aparna is married to Mulayam's son Prateek Yadav.

Denying the allegations, Bisht said, "He (Siddiqui) has himself given in writing that he has received the information. We function according to the Act. (In my office) he was thumping the desk and misbehaving. He wanted the work done as per his wish. He was making it an issue and trying to blackmail me."

While Siddiqui was released from Hazratganj police station around 5 pm, another delegation of RTI activists, led by Urvashi Sharma, met Governor Ram Naik and submitted a memorandum alleging "exploitation" of RTI activists at the State Information Commission's office. She also submitted in her memorandum that the present information commissioners are not concerned about transparency and are unable to take judicious decision on their own.
