[rti4empowerment] Democracy in ancient India (King Vikramaditya shows the way)

Democracy in ancient India

King Vikramaditya was known for his justice and kindness. Even Gods sought his help
in settling issues. In his kingdom, no one was unhappy. His people loved him and were proud of him.

Once, Vikramaditya was showing a neighbouring King around the Palace gardens.

"Splendid!" the King exclaimed, looking at the beauty of the palace garden.
Then suddenly his eyes fell on something and he shouted, "What is that? I did not see that before."

Vikramaditya looked to where the King was pointing.

There was a hut just a few steps away from the palace Garden gate.

"What is this hut doing here?" asked the King

"It belongs to an old woman. She has been living here for a long time," replied Vikramaditya.
I offered to buy it for any amount, but she refused as she had lived there with her late husband
and the hut held memories of her late husband"

The king thought for a while,"If he wanted, Vikramaditya could have taken it by force and no one would have cared"

Having thought thus, the King then addressed Vikramaditya and said,
" O King, now that I know why the hut is there, I believe it makes the palace gardens even more beautiful

The people then realized why their king was so highly respected by all the people and by all other neighboring kingdoms.

That was democracy in action in ancient India, where the wishes of the minority were not trampled upon by the majority in the name of progress, beautification or nationalism.

And just to be clear minority does not just refer to a religious minority but minority in opinion, minority in thought as well as minority in the right course of action.

But democracy in India has always been about  who has the majority vote  which if you think about it  is just another way of saying that might is right, which the present govt. is exhibiting with its wilfullness in pushing agendas in complete violation of SC orders.

Real democracy  was never there in India and in fact has been completely missing in India right from its first day of independance to this day

With best wishes,
