Sharp increase in crime against women in UP

LUCKNOW: The biggest crime against women in UP is 'kidnapping and abduction' and 'cruelty by husband or his relatives'. Incidents of rape have seen a 95% rise in 2013 compared to 2010. Similarly, incidents of kidnapping have seen at least 78% increase in 2013 compared to 2010.
Crime against women increased tremendously between 2010 and 2013 in UP. Compared to 2010, there has been a sharp increase in incidents of rape, molestation, dowry harassment and abduction and kidnapping of women and girls in 2013.
In response to an RTI query by activist Sanjay Sharma, figures provided by national crime record bureau (NCRB) show crime against women increased by 12.25% in 2011, 16.8% in 2012 and 61.3% in 2013 compared to 2010.
In 2010, as many as 20,169 incidents of crime against women took place in UP. In 2011, number of such incidents increased to 22,639 and in 2012, it increased further to 23,569. In 2013, there was a sharp increase as 32,546 incidents of crime against women were recorded in the state.
Compared to 2010, at least 1,487 more incidents of rape, 4,510 more incidents of molestation and 1,162 more incidents of harassment for dowry took place in 2013 in UP.
