Sir, you increased the rail fares. That is good, ......... I mean that is bad, very bad. Here is why:
You should not have acted blindly in a congress-ishly way and resorted to fare hikes. Instead, you should have got all the data AND should have also travelled incognito on a couple of long-distance trains (yes, by sleeper class and not by a/c first class) and should have analysed whether such fare hike was at all a necessity, and whether there were not other ways (yes, cutting corruption and inefficiencies).
This write suggests you take an incognito sleeper class train journey on Goa Express from Vasco to New Delhi OR you could try your hand by NE Express from New Delhi to New Jalpaiguri (there are dozens of other suggestion one could make). Had you done that, you would have found:
1. Reservations are all booked 30 days in advance. But when one actuall boards the train, it is half vaccant. Instead there is a long list of RAC and Waiting list. This is exploited by the TT's to collect Rs 200 from each person to allot a berth. Also there are at least 20 or even 30 extra passengers on board who block the entrances and exits and bathrooms and passageways (see photos). A rough calculation would show something like Rs 40,000 looted from train passengers per train per trip. Multiply that with hundreds of trains all-India, and hopefully you would get the / a picture ? A savings of hundreds of crores per year.
2. About 90% of the pantry staff overcharge. Rs. 10 instead of Rs 7 for tea, and Rs 40 instead of Rs 34 for cold drinks, etc. That is a loot of something like Rs 5000 per train per trip. Do you see something or IS IT ALL MaCullay's fault ?
This writer has offered earlier, and does so here again: For 1/2 your salary and perks, this writer will fix about 75% of the problems within 6 months !
