NEW DELHI: The government spent Rs 15.50 lakh on UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's visits abroad between 2006 and 2011, according to data accessed through RTI.
The Prime Minister's Office on Friday had said the government did not incur any expenses on Sonia's travel. The statement sought to differentiate between spending by the government and cost borne by the Special Protection Group for the security contingent.
The Rs 15 lakh spent is in addition to Rs 64.76 lakh that Indian missions across the world spent on the SPG which travelled with Sonia, according to information disclosed under RTI.
Sonia is a Z-plus security protectee with a high level of threat perception.
According to replies given by Indian missions to Hisar-based RTI applicant Ramesh Verma, Sonia's travel to South Africa, China, Germany and
Belgium were paid for by the government.
According to the Indian embassy in Brussels, Sonia travelled to Belgium between November 9-12, 2006 and incurred Rs 34,292 in expenses. The PMO statement had mentioned that the trip was on the invitation of the
Belgian government to receive a national honour. The total cost of the trip was less than Rs 3 lakh and was paid for by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the statement issued on October 5 said.
In its response to Verma's query on the amount spent on the Congress chief's travel, the Indian consulate in Johannesburg in a reply dated November 2011 said Rs 14.06 lakh was spent which included daily allowance, accommodation, phone and travel expenses. For her trip to China, while Sonia's expenses for
Beijing (in 2007 and 2008) and
Shanghai (in 2007) were paid for by the hosts — the International Department of
Communist Party of China — her Xian trip in 2007 cost the Indian embassy in Beijing Rs 70,505. The embassy spent Rs 26.01 lakh on logistics like hotel and transport for the SPG team.
