CONDEMNATION RALLY BY TAMIL NADU BJP EX SERVICEMEN

by

Lt Col CR Sundar, President Tamil Nadu BJP Ex Servicemen Cell

Acts of desecration of memorials honouring our martyrs and perpetration of violence against our veteran community should be strongly condemned by one and all.

A most despicable and detestable act was played out in Mumbai on 11 Aug 2012. On that day some anti-national muslim leaders called on the rowdy elements among the muslims to assemble at Azad Maidan. They then instigated the crowd to riot.

During the riot the 'Amar Jawan' Memorial which is located outside the office of the Municipal Corporation of greater Mumbai was desecrated. Picture of a muslim youth in his religious dress kicking the memorial was widely published.

The memorial was erected in honour of two Sepoys of the First War of Independence, 1857 and it consists of a moulded rifle on a pedestal. The names of the Jawans honoured - Sayyed Hussein and Mangal Gadiya are inscribed on the pedestal along with the words AMAR JAWAN. The event caused a great amount of anguish and agony in the hearts and minds of the Ex Servicemen all over India.

The Tamil Nadu BJP Ex Servicemen Cell was the only Ex Servicemen organisation of the State that condemned the shameful occurrence unequivocally. We demanded that the desecrators should immediately be arrested and muslim organisations should apologise to the Nation and to the families of the martyrs. We also demanded that both houses of Parliament and the Tamil Nadu State Assembly should pass resolutions condemning the incident.

The governments did not respond. However, thankfully Sri Raj Thackeray oversaw the repair of the memorial and ensured that its honour was restored. Ten days later he led a rally and paid floral tribute at the memorial.

In another appallingly disgraceful act, on 30 Sep 2012, one of our heroes Lt Gen KS (Bulbul) Brar was attacked during a visit to London. This time it appears that the attackers were pro Kalistanis. Gen Brar had won the gratitude of the nation when in an act of unparalleled patriotism he led the forces which cleansed the Amritsar Golden Temple by ridding it of pro Kalistan criminals, murderers terrorists.

Now the remnants of those anti national forces want to set up a memorial for those terrorists inside that sacred temple which is one of the holiest of holy shrines of our great and blessed country. Gen Brar rightly opposes that act of sacrilege and has strongly criticized those misguided elements and the politicians who back them including the Chief Minister who is from the Akali Dal.

The Indian Armed Forces stands for the glory and unity of our nation and will not hesitate to condemn acts of the aforementioned nature in the strongest manner or waver in using every means possible to denounce them. Our symbols are hallowed and have been consecrated by the blood of our nation's youth. Our veterans are inviolate. We do not brook any threat or dishonour to our monuments or to our brave men and women.

We, therefore, have resolved to hold a condemnation rally near the Raj Bhavan at Chennai in December this year. During the rally we will collectively denounce the perpetrators of shameful conducts against the nation and express our collective condemnation of their acts.

At the end of it we will present a petition to the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

I call upon all Ex Servicemen organisations of Tamil Nadu to pay heed and whole heartedly join this rally to condemn acts of dishonour and desecration against men and matters we revere.

A number of veteran activists are keen to bring about a coalition of associations to add strength to our struggles.

Let this condemnation rally be the first of our actions together.
