Friends,
Recently, Institute for Research and Documentation in Social Sciences (IRDS), a civil society, had announced a Fellowship on "The Role of Media in the current Anti-corruption Movements" about which I had intimated you through mail. Based on the various responses obtained by IRDS, the fellowship has been bestowed upon Ms Anuradha Saibaba, Assistant Professor, National Law School of India University, Banglore. Her work would endeavour to highlight the affirmative role donned by the media in combating corruption in the country. The study would also provide strategies for the media to be a facilitating agent in challenging corruption effectively and would present existing lacunae in laws, structures and systems in addressing corruption and elucidate a road map for bolstering the anti-corruption movement in the country.
As per Ms Saibaba, the paper would try to analyse how sting operations, expose, investigatory journalism, opinion polls etc. have assisted the media in uncovering scams and scamsters. Additionally the media's expertise in using the law- Right to Information Act, Public Interest Litigation etc. would also be covered to showcase the effectiveness of the media in its efforts to eradicate corruption. The study would also reflect on social media like Facebook, Tweeter, blogs etc. have also exhibited immense potential in reinvigorating the youth in anti-corruption tirade.
This is the way the study has been framed at the moment. The period of fellowship shall be from 01 July 2012 to 31 December 2012 after which Ms Anuradha Saibaba shall be presenting a detailed Final Report.
Since the topic is of much wider public relevance, hence I would request all my public-spirited friends to make any suitable suggestion they fell that needs to be incorporated in the study.
