When you are in Rome, do as the Romans do
Today there was a strike by the advocates association in Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. I also had a case listed in the Court. An advocate, known to me, was also sitting in the Court room waiting to argue his case despite the strike.

Suddenly the High Court Judge called this advocate by name and said-"Mr X, there is a saying that when in Rome, do as the Romans do", meaning very apparently that when all other advocates are on strike, he shall not strike a discordant note and defy the consensus.
The advocate immediately understood the meaning and profusely apologized for his presence. I was witness to the entire conversation and felt internally pained at the huge role reversals. But I fully understood my limitations of being an ordinary mortal involved in matters related with a High Court Judge on one hand and the advocates on the other.
The Supreme Court has said again and again that advocate's strike is completely illegal and the Courts shall not take cognizance of these strikes in any circumstances. Again, everyone knows about the huge number of cases pending in the law courts, and the losses in the judicial process incurred in such strikes. But what can be done if Rome is burning and Nero devotes himself to playing fiddle?
