| Friends, The Writ for conducting CAT examinations for entrance to IIMs in Hindi and other regional languages filed in Hon'ble Allahabad High Court, Lucknow Bench by me and wife Nutan came for hearing today(04/03/2011) before the double bench. Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education along with IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Banglore, IIM Calcutta and IIM Lucknow have been made respondents in this case.
Sri Asok Pande, our counsel presented the facts before the Hon'ble Court and requested it to direct the Respondents to conduct the CAT examination in Hindi Medium and other major regional languages and to take the Group Discussion, Essay and the Interview also in Hindi. The Court particularly asked Sri Pande to clarify two issues- the legal and constitutional status of Hindi and about the disadvantage due to the present arrangement. 08/03/2011(Tuesday) has been fixed as the next date of hearing.
The writ says that IIMs, though an informal IIM Director's Forum began the Common Admission Test (CAT) for intake of students in Post-graduate Diploma Programmes in Management and subsequently in fellowship Programmes in Management. CAT consists of questions that evaluate a candidate's quantitative, verbal, and logical & data interpretation abilities. These tests are conducted only in English language.
We insist in our writ that this arrangement has clearly adverse and discriminatory effect on lakhs of candidates who have Hindi or other regional languages as their medium of instruction till the Bachelor's and Master's degree. We have presented examples of two other equally prestigious examinations of National repute- the IITJEE and Civil Service Examinations. In IITJEE today the medium of examination is both Hindi and English, while the Mains examination and even the Interview of Civil Services has all the languages specified in the Eight schedule as their medium of examination.
