7 January, Mumbai: A signature-cum-poster campaign held near Thane Railway Station on Wednesday, 5 January, collected around 1,200 endorsements for the protection of RTI activists. While the immediate reason for this campaign was a mob assault on activist Yeshwant Gavand at Bhandup on Sunday, Maharashtra has emerged as the leading state for attacks on activists and murders.
The organizers, Jankalyan Manch, put up flex posters and generated a lot of public sympathy for the cause from railway commuters and passersby."We want that the government must not only protect RTI activists, but also take necessary action against corrupt people through CID, Anti Corruption Bureau, Crime Branch etc.
