Riots as a political strategy
The central government has warned all 28 states of the country that communal tension is expected to escalate in the run – up to the national elections so they should improve their ability to collect intelligence to prevent riots. Many political observers think that some political parties hope to benefit from polarization of votes on communal lines in the coming elections. UP which sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha plays an important role in formation of the national government.
The communal riot which started in Muzaffarnagar on August 27 and resulted in the death of about 30 persons should be viewed from this angle also. This riot is not an isolated incident. Police records show that 39 communal riots have happened between March 2012, when Mr. Akhilesh Yadav took over as CM, and August 2013. As many as 22 districts across the state have been put under curfew at various times in the past one year. Muzaffarnagar itself has seen three cases of communal riots in 2013 including the latest one. In June last year too, Muzaffarnagar had seen clashes which left 20 people injured.
This time two peculiar things happened. One, the social media was misused to fan the communal flames and IBN7 journalist Rajesh Verma was shot dead while he was covering the arson inMuzaffarnagar town. A two year old video which is supposed to have been made outside India was sent over the social media site and went viral. The video shows persons belonging to a community beating a person belonging to the other community. The UP government is doing everything possible to tell the people that the video was fake.
My Views thinks that it is high time that the general people of the country speak against the misuse of human lives for political purposes. All of us should tell the political parties that we will not permit the social fabric of this country to be weakened.
