UP govt denies reply to RTI on CM, cabinet ministers' assets over past 5 years

#Lucknow #Uttar Pradesh The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has denied providing information regarding assets of the chief minister and his cabinet ministers over past five years sought through an Right to Information (RTI) application.

RTI activist Sanjay Sharma, had filed the RTI seeking the information from public information officer of the chief secretary's office on September 4, 2014. The plea was transferred to the confidential department of the state government.

The Public Information Officer (PIO) of the confidential department Krishna Gopal said in reply that the information was not available with the department.

This, according to Sharma, is in violation of the UP Ministers and Legislators (Publication of Assets and Liabilities) Act (1975) that makes it mandatory for members of the state assembly to submit details of their assets and liabilities within the first 20 days of the new financial year.

"The rules of disclosing assets for ministers exist since ages. But still our leaders are reluctant to share it," said the applicant Sanjay Sharma.

Significantly, it is not only the UP Ministers and Legislators Act that mandates disclosure, even the code of conduct under the Public Representative Act, 1951 of the Constitution of India states that the CM and his council of ministers are expected to set an example for other MLAs by declaring their own and their family members' assets and liabilities every year.
