DRAFT OF LETTER TO PM

To

Dr Manmohan Singh,

Prime Minister of India,

South Block, New Delhi – 110 001.

Sub: Ms Arundhati Roy's words are a crime, but Mr Raja's actions are not?

Sir,

For publicly stating that "Kashmir has never been an integral part of India", an FIR has been registered against writer-activist Arundhati Roy. She now faces arrest and prosecution. If convicted of sedition, she faces life imprisonment.

On the other hand, no FIR has been registered against A Raja, Suresh Kalmadi, Sushilkumar Shinde, Vilasrao Deshmukh, Ashok Chavan and a host of other politicians and bureaucrats, despite ample documentary evidence of corruption. Unlike lesser mortals, they have not even been interrogated by CBI – which reports to Personnel Ministry. Is it because you hold this portfolio?

Law enforcement authorities are resisting civil society's efforts to get FIRs registered against them. We ask you: Why, Sir? Why is that? Is it because you have failed to ensure Rule of Law? Or worse still, because you are actively preventing Rule of Law?

The Constitution of India promises us "JUSTICE, social, economic and political" and also "EQUALITY of status and of opportunity". Article 14 – our fundamental right of Equality Before the Law, says, "The State shall not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws..."

Are these words only of ceremonial value?

A WORD OF CAUTION

Sir, the man on the street is in despair. His meager personal wealth is being ravaged by inflation, and his public wealth being looted by super-rich politicians and their crooked business associates. Your shining economic growth figures are based on the wealth of the latter. Your eyes and your feet never fall on the growing squalor of the streets where most of us live.

With all due respect, your vision of India is distorted by your coteries and a lifetime of air-conditioning and tinted glasses. Therefore it may appear to you that Arundhati Roy's words are a bigger threat to India than the actions of Messrs. Raja, Kalmadi, Chavan & Co.

A threat to whose India, Sir? Your India or our India?

Please rub your eyes and take corrective action before the common man cries out, "I am not an integral part of Dr Manmohan Singh's India. I secede."

Yours sincerely,
